The Death of Civility

I have for some time been growing ever more deeply concerned about the fate of our society. It would seem that the quality of our discourse is
almost directly inverse with the quantity. As letters, memos and phones give way to emails, tweets, texting and message boards, the level of courtesy, of
warmth, even of decency falls ever faster to the point where even among...

I have become sundered from my life of six decades upon this planet. Everything material that I have held dear in my adult life sits in two 10'x20'
storage units, inaccessable to me - my library, my cookbooks and cookware, my camera collection and my 1930 RCA floor model radio, every bit of the flotsam and
jetsam that floats around us for a few decades and defines the comfort zone of our lives. Gone.

Is it just me, or does this time in our political life seem like a time out, a step back, a breather while things sort themselves out? At the moment, I am
just tired of caring, weary of worry, just burned out. Of COURSE I still keep up and I maintain a healthy interest in how all the stories play out ... but I
just cannot work myself up to a good rant at the moment.

I have drawn the parallel before, and it holds more strongly today than ever, to the situation with the Jacksonian Democrats of 1850 and their

It is a matter of unending amusement to me to watch the eternal hatred for Clinton, and the mental calesthinics engaged in by the right to support their
suspicions of the man. Many see in this only the mirror image of the left's hatred for Bush, but in all fairness I can see one monumentally important
difference: those who hate Clinton are left clinging to lies such as his "serial rapes" or the "murder" of Vince Foster or his

I believe that Rove has one more ugly, rabid, feces-crusted mangy dyspeptic incontinent rabbit to pull out of his hat ... but only one. I think that enough
lies of enough magnitude will be told, that yet another absolutely meaningless nonissue will arise just in time to distract the electorate and once again
mobilize the party base, and the Republicans will keep control of BOTH houses.

the Gaza Strip to their attack upon Lebanon ... and "bring it on" goading of Syria ... they act as if they were fully intent upon widening the

I am unfortunately familiar with all of the financing stunts that one can pull off in this life and survive ... and a larger and larger percentage of our
population is, too. As wages enter their second decade of stagnation and as health-insurance costs continue their second decade of double-digit
